Females are not small men. Historically performance- and conditioning-based research has predominately derived data from experimental research using male populations. This is due in part for ease; females have a menstrual cycle. The associated fluctuations in hormones make it more difficult and time consuming to standardise measurement conditions. However, precisely because of the physiologic sex-differences it may not be appropriate to blanket extrapolate findings from male to female populations. We need to better understand the female athlete and patient.

About Ass Prof Kirsty Elliott-Sale

Kirsty is a World leading expert in female physiology and the female athlete. She was previously the Head of the Musculoskeletal Physiology Research Group at Nottingham Trent University (UK) and recently took the role of Head of Female Endocrinology and Exercise Physiology at Manchester Metropolitan University (UK). Kirsty lectures in the areas of Exercise Physiology, particularly in Female Physiology, Endocrinology, Performance, and Health. She has more than 20 years of experience working predominately with females, particularly with elite female athletes and maternal populations (e.g., postpartum women). She has an international reputation in female endocrinology and musculoskeletal physiology, as well as expertise in exercise physiology with specific regards to the design and implementation of exercise-based interventions. She has extensive experience in running research projects in sporting, clinical and academic environments.

Research
Since the completion of her PhD, which examined the effects of female reproductive hormones on muscle strength, her research has concentrated on various aspects of health and athletic performance in female populations. She has the following main areas of interest: – The effects of menstrual cycle phase an oral contraceptives on athletic performance – Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport and the Female Athlete Triad – Maternal Obesity: exercise and nutrition-based interventions for weight management during and following pregnancy – Musculoskeletal Health and Metabolism: the bone metabolic responses to strenuous exercise and feeding
