The Psychology of Buy-In
So you’ve constructed the best rehab plan for your patient; an effective, systematic programme to enable a fast and effective return to normal function or sport; here comes the next challenge – persuading your patient to engage, the ‘buy-in‘!
We all know the frustrations of people not achieving their goals because they haven’t adhered to their programme. Maybe they didn’t have the belief, the trust or the motivation, maybe they perceived their barriers as insurmountable, but the truth is, it’s all in the mind!
Physiotherapists, sports therapists and others involved in rehabilitation & conditioning have the unenviable task of mastering not just their own discipline, but that of the psychologist too. Peoples’ barriers and motivations to engage in rehabilitation exercise are different, each patient may require a unique approach, using different language to optimise their chance of buy-in and their belief in the prescribed rehabilitation plan.
THE COURSE WILL COVER
This 1-day course is all about identifying patient barriers and motivations, and then learning the techniques to achieve buy-in to rehab (or conditioning) applicable to a range of patients, profiles and abilities.
Led by Serena Simmons, a highly-esteemed Chartered Psychologist (with an impressive media profile to boot!) the course will introduce you to the key concepts of motivational interviewing, mental toughness, nudge theory, habit formation and a range of other psychological tools that will give you deeper understanding around the best ways to get your clients to engage. You will see that it all starts with your mindset … the key to unraveling the motivations that drive behaviours.
After this course you should able be to:
- Understand important psychological strategies related to motivational theory and it’s application
- Understand and identify barriers to engagement in your client group
- Leave with a tool kit to help you identify barriers and keep on-going track of your clients progress
- Feel confident in implementing a set of strategies to help encourage your client to remain engaged and stay in communication with you throughout their time working with you

Serena has over 22 years of experience working in the field of psychology. She has been a Senior Psychology lecturer at Nottingham Trent University for the last 12 years and has concurrently run a private practice and Psychological Consultancy for over 10 years.
Her previous clients include the New Zealand Treasury, Department of Constitutional Affairs (UK), Eton College, HM Prison Service, Chamber of Commerce, Leeds Beckett University, Members of Parliament as well as numerous sports teams and individuals undergoing rehabilitation. Serena is a Chartered member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and a member of the Special Group in Coaching Psychology. Serena is highly regarded in her field and is frequently interviewed for and featured in major media ,including ITV news, Sky News, BBC Radio 4, BBC Five Live, The Guardian, The Times, The Independent, The Daily Mail and the Conversation.
Her speciality is effecting change and she is a strong advocate of positive psychology.
